What a Difference a Week Makes

Last weekend we had a borderline blizzard in Denver.  In our part of town we got about a foot throughout the day, and it made my commute to work the following day really sluggish and stressful.  But, alas, here we are a week later.  The sun was shining all day today, and at one point I read a 62 degree reading on the dash of my car.  I left the coat at home today, opting for a 3/4 length t-shirt and a pair of sunglasses.  Oh, Denver!  Such schizophrenic weather...  But this weekend has already been much more productive than last, and it's not quite half over.  I'm working on another Pinterest Day, so I'll be posting some of that tomorrow.

Matt and I had a date night last night - our first, true date night in a really long time, and it was a bit a of a bust.  We'd made plans to do dinner and a movie.  Dinner at one of our favorite places, a little mini-brewery called Dad's and Dude's, because they have delicious pizza and amazing mac and cheese.  But unfortunately for us it's 5280 Restaurant Week in Denver, meaning that any participating restaurant was offering a set-menu-deal for $52.80 per couple.  Dad's and Dude's had an hour long wait.  And at 7:00 pm, with a movie starting at 8:25, we couldn't swing it.  So we called a few other nearby restaurants - an hour and a half, an hour, 45 minutes... we were tempted to go to a fast food restaurant just in the sake of time.  But I remembered a small Italian restaurant nearby, so we quickly drove up the road to check it out.  Luckily they had no wait, and we were seated with about an hour to dine.

The restaurant was quaint, a small family-owned Italian place with somewhat stereotypical decor: red and white checked tablecloths, statues of rotund Italian chefs, Italian classical music playing.  We perused the short menu, deciding to order some garlic bread to start.  Matt, in his usual and endearing way, ordered chicken fettuccine alfredo.  I decided to get some shrimp linguine in a pesto sauce.  Our first confusion came when the waiter delivered our garlic bread and two bowls of minestrone soup - which we didn't order, but was apparently complimentary with the meal.  A small salad followed, then our pastas with a basket of little, doughy bread balls.  The funniest part was, when the pasta arrived, I decided to go out on a limb and request a "paired" wine - the waiter asked if I preferred red or white, as both would pair well with my dish, so I told him I typically drank whites.  I was shocked when he delivered the entire bottle to our table.  Is this common?!  I was so confused.  Did he think Matt and I were sharing?  Well, I thought, it's here.  I'm gonna drink it!  So I had two glasses with dinner, which barely dented the bottle.  The waiter came back to clear our plates and asked if I enjoyed the wine.  I did, so I said so.  "Would you like it?" he said, and I heard "Did you like it?" ... which confused me again, because I'd told him that I liked it already.  He repeated himself, and when I still didn't understand, he clarified: "Would you like me to cork it?"  OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH.  I'd heard from a co-worker that it isn't illegal to take a corked bottle of wine with you, but I was kind of surprised a restaurant offered it to me.  I have so much to learn about wine.

After dinner we went to the movie theater to see Identity Thief, which was really funny!  It wasn't quite as raunchy as I expected, but it was still really enjoyable.  But our night was par for the course, as the two obnoxious, rude, inconsiderate teenagers in front of us were texting through most of the movie.  I wanted to crack their skulls together!!  The worst thing was that they were with their mother, who wasn't willing to do anything to discipline them.  It was the giant cherry on top of the crap sundae that was our evening.

But we took our restaurant wine home, each having a glass in our kitchen (I can't believe it, a wine that even Matt will drink!) and chuckling about the ridiculous evening we'd just had.  I couldn't help but feel sad... I wanted a sweet and romantic night with my husband, and it just seemed like a big bust.  It was, at the least, memorable... so there's that I suppose.

In other news, I met with our realtor earlier this week to discuss house hunting.  She said that, in our price range, houses are moving fast.  So, bottom line, we need to move fast to get one.  I'm a little disheartened by the amount of houses out there for us - apparently the multitude of houses we've been looking at on Zillow are mostly either already sold or under contract.  I'm just hoping that we can get something we love.  I'm not in a huge hurry to buy, because every month we're putting away quite a bit in savings for both the down payment, the furnishings for the house, and for another car so Matt can stop spending 2+ hours on public transit every day.  I'm hoping to move into our house by the end of June.  I'm looking forward to a 4th of July barbecue at our new house!!  But we'll have to wait and see what happens.

But that's all for now - I've got to go work on my Pinterest projects for the evening and get prepped for my major grocery shopping trip tomorrow... I hate grocery shopping so much...!  But I guess it has to be done.  Here's to a really productive day tomorrow!
