I returned to work this week, kind of. I was scheduled to work at the coffee kiosk Wednesday through Saturday. On Tuesday I got a text from my former co-worker saying the convention center had cut a kiosk so I wouldn't be needed till Thursday. So, on Thursday, I trucked down to the convention center early in the morning to work back behind the bar. It was a fun day, actually; I worked with an old friend from Caribou (I'd asked her to be hired for the carts when they were first set up at the convention center) and we got to catch up. It was a slow day, equaling a whopping dollar an hour in tips, but still a good time. It felt really good to be behind the bar again.
Thursday night we stopped at Old Chicago. During the Beer Festival we'd received a few "Mystery Cards" which could be traded for gift cards worth anything between $1 and $100. We had to check and use them before the 3rd so we stopped in, expecting them to each be worth a dollar, and we'd have one beer each and head home. However, in a first-ever bout of good luck, we got the $100 gift card... and splurged. Dinner for me, Matt, and Angela along with beers and cocktails and desserts... and it. Was. GOOD.
Unfortunately while we were at Old Chicago I got a text telling me that the kiosks at the convention center had pretty much been shut down for the remainder of the event... so I only ended up working one of the four days I was expecting to work, so I walked away with just over $70. I was told that there would be more events coming up, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
So on Friday I spent some time shopping (unfortunately putting it on my credit card, boo) for some work tops for the job at Bath & Body Works. Angela and I were out for a really long time, but it was nice to spend the time doing something fun. Then, on Saturday, Matt and I went back to Old Chicago to finish using up our $100 card. All in all a pretty mild weekend.
Yesterday I started at Bath & Body Works, so I spent 4 hours at their store in the mall going through their training videos and workbooks and all of that. They have a pretty strict social media policy so I can't say much about them, but I'm pretty excited to get rolling and hopefully start picking up more hours. I go back today to finish my training, then I get to dig into the world of candles, soaps, and perfumes.
I also have spoken to the manager of The Container Store at Park Meadows a couple times. The first time was last week when he called in response to my application. He told me that he'd had me on his "short list" for interviews, but had called the Cherry Creek store to interview me because we live closer to that store. A couple days later I got an email from that same manager asking me to call for a phone interview. So, I called him, and we chatted a bit. He asked if I could attend a group interview this Friday, which I can't, as we are driving to Minnesota on Friday. So he told me that, if I didn't hear from Cherry Creek by Monday next week, to give him a call to schedule something. I'm excited at the idea of working there, but I don't know how we'll get through until I get a paycheck from B&BW. I pseudo-balanced the checking account today and, if I don't spend a cent between now and Matt's next pay day we'll just barely make it, with about a $3 window for error.
We took the Subaru back to the mechanic yesterday as it is still having problems with the fuel system. It is no longer dying, but it idles down incredibly low and jolts forward when you press the gas pedal. We're hoping it's a fuel filter or injectors, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
So for now we just keep forging forward, day by day, trying to hang on until things straighten out. I suppose I could write much more about what I've been thinking and feeling lately, but that will have to wait until I have a bit more time and energy. Right now I have to get ready to learn more about body spray.
